Chaze:
The chaze are the result of a new interest of mine: gongfu style tea preparation. I am interested
in the Chinese method of tea preparation partly because of the many accessories involved. While
I don’t currently make brewing vessels (teapots or gaiwan), I do like to make other components
of the typical tea service: chaze (tea leaf display trays), gong dao bei (“justice cups” or pouring
vessels- the same as the katakuchi in the show), and small tea cups (sized for many short tea
steeps). The particular chaze I’ve sent for the show are all modeled from a mold I made of a
papaya while working as an artist-in-residence in Taiwan last spring.
