MALCOLM WRIGHT

"I am interested in exploring the freedom of personal interpretation within the well-defined limits of classical pottery. I am inspired by the lineage, or history of an idea in form, and see my work as part of a long and changing continuum."

An apprentice to legendary Karatsu potters Tarouemon and Takashi Nakazato, Malcolm Wright creates both functional and contemplative works. He esteems traditional Japanese wood-firing techniques, noting that the unpredictable flames add "intangible effects" and marks that make each of Wright's pieces unique to the fire it was made in.
