Working with clay offers me the opportunity to explore form and surface with a material whose various stages of metamorphosis engage my imagination. I use clay in its plastic state to explore the "vessel" form as a skin for my drawings and paintings. Makjng the form work in terms of volume, foot, shoulder, neck, and iip is a conscious activity for me. It entalis constant looking, touching and sensing the rightness of that individual form while it is still on the wheel. With these forms I am able to fill the surfaces with images and text that are of interest to me at that time.

I use raku, stoneware and porcelain clay bodies. My work is concentrated on two types of TIrings: raku (low TIre) and high TIre reduction work in my gas kiln. I respond to each type of day with different shapes and surface treatments. I am generally interested in a rich surface glaze effect which is combined wi1h drawing and painting with glaze materials.
